Effervescence in the warehousing industry

Image
The warehousing industry is observing major changes in recent years. To mention few are as- The industry structure is transforming from fragmented and unorganized players to large organized players. The industry is observing great transformation in working from just storing to planning and executing the supply chain up to the end user. Increasing institutional investor participation in the sector. Implementation of automation   and smart warehousing solutions in warehouse operations. Sharing data and space from other players in the field. New R&D is being carried out to reduce the operational cost and increase the efficiency of warehousing activities. Government is also realizing the importance of the sector and has started to acknowledge the efforts put by the industry.   Apart from these innovation or trend few new process and technique are being used by the industry which in coming days will surely put it among the most organized sector. One such proce...

Budget 2020 – The sprouting hope for warehousing industry

The term Warehouse is almost as old as agriculture. Although in recent, agriculture has seen few major transformation but the post harvest technology and storage is still struggling hard.  Indian  farmers incur loss of Rs 92,651 crore per year in  post - harvest , the primary causes of which are poor storage and transportation facilities. Ironically, to improve the state of storage and transportation facilities for food crops to control the post harvest losses all it need is an investment of Rs 89,375 crore. This is according to a high-level Dalwai committee report, a figure lower than the annual post-harvest losses. About 65-70% of total foodgrains produced in the country are stored at farm level. There are estimates that substantial quantity of foodgrains (about 6.0% to 10% of total production) are damaged due to moisture, insects, rodents and fungi. When Govt is trying hard to double the income of farmers by 2022 they can’t ignore the post harve...

Upgrading and updating of warehouses

I was into a project regarding storage and supply chain . The primary data we needed was to know the movement of commodities and requirement of space. Warehouses are supposed to be the loci in the supply chain, so we started with warehouses.  To know the supply chain better and requirement of storage space we contacted warehouses for data pertaining to it. Only one of 3 warehouses were able to map the movement plan in last 5 years. Most of the warehouses ended up in saying they do not map the requirement of space or movement plans. Data is a backbone for any research so ultimately the research could not be carried out. This incident made us to learn - 1. The warehouses in India has not changed for last 60 years when it comes to operation. 2. Maintenance of records are also on the same track. 3. There is lack of making system efficient through vertical and horizontal field co-ordination. An update and upgrade of working of warehouses is required so that data management should get ea...

Thinking to write new blog. Don't wait just write whatever comes to your mind. Writing is a skill which comes out with constantly writing and composing our thought process. It will develop gradually every time you starts writing. Question is what to write? Write anything of your area of interest. Write what you saw today. Write anything that comes to your mind. Its not necessary to publish your thought everytime. Just keep writing the things that you like. One good habit of writing is to substantiate your thought with data rather talking abstract. This is because data gives more clear picture and it is more admissible to reader than the abstract thoughts. Although here it is not denied that abstract thoughts are ignored but yes to more extent they are less entertained. I dont want to write too heavy to confuse the reader still if you have any question drop as comment. Happy writing.

Survival of the fittest- Obsolete

Warehouse is a place in supply chain where goods sits until information moves them. The importance of warehouse can be ascertained by its origin. It is called necessity is the mother of invention. The warehouse is in fact the second best reason for making human civilize after agriculture. People gradually understood that the life of nomad can be quitted only when there is proper facility of storage. Gradually people worked on it and are continuously developing to make it more efficient and worthy. Current Scenario- India is no different. With civilization the country was pioneer in bringing the idea of storage facilities with various storage structures and techniques. But the development did not match the pace of requirement.  Currently the warehousing is growing at the rate of 10% while the market of warehouse is growing at 35%-40% per annum. The gap between two is very wide. The organized warehouse account for only 15% of total wareho...

Whose Bill?

Image
Food security bill is a good attempt by the government to ensure food and nutritional security to all. The bill is designed to extend subsidized food to pregnant women and children under the age of 16. The bill will ensure the security to almost 67% of population at the subsidized rate of Rs. 1-3. The eligible population will get 5 kg in total of rice, wheat, pearl millet and sorghum per month. Rice @ Rs. 3/kg, Wheat @ Rs. 2/kg and coarse cereals @ Re 1/kg. Being a nationwide project it will cost from 0.8% to 1.1% of GDP. The government says it will provide 62 million tonnes of food a year under the bill and the size of the subsidy is estimated around $24 billion. Now the population is increasing geometrically, value of currency is declining, inflation is increasing so the operating cost will also increase. These all means more expense on subsidy annually. Down the line viability of this project seems under the banner of question mark. Not only the budget part its implementation ...
